First, congratulations to Neville for his part in "On Monday Next" at Castlemaine, those that saw him appreciated the fine control he used in toning his natural character down to the level of Harry Blacker - The megalomaniac Producer.
It was as a result of going to the play Saturday night (and the lousy weather on Sunday) that I wrote last week's rot.
Of course mine wasn't a real play, it didn't have descriptions of the characters. A line comes to mind to describe Andy - bar tender, par excellence - "he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke" - Billy Joel - Piano Man - the complete verse reads
Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be
He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me."
As the smile ran away from his face
"Well I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"
Well see, it doesn't quite fit, Andy gives out free drinks - sometimes - Lyn got a whole bottle to take home last week on a spot prize. And smoking is done outside. In the interests of public health we could throw in another Billy Joel verse:
Sweet Virginia Cigarette
Burning in my hand
Well you used to be a friend of mine
But now I understand
You've been eating up inside me for some time
But I know your gonna get me
Somewhere along the line.
Joel has some good stuff on that album. Like the couplet from Worse comes to Worst where Joel claims if worse comes to worst he has a woman in New Mexico:
Oh, and if I don't have a car, I'll hitch
I got a thumb and she's a son of a bitch.
Ain't no crime is a sort of streetwise, down at the heels song with a similar philosophy to the Robbie Burns, A man's a man for a' that.
Ain't no crime,
Yeah, it's good to get it on to get a load off your mind,
It ain't no crime,
Well it's just human nature, happens all the time,
It ain't no crime.
A philosophy to consider? Debate it at the bar.
